He is a guitarist and singer born in Lennoxtown, Dumbartonshire, Scotland.
From 1971-1972 he was in The Roy Young Band and appeared on their album Mr. Funky. He also appeared with them when they backed Chuck Berry on his 1972 chart topper “My Ding-a-Ling”.
Later in 1972 he was a founder member of the Average White Band and soon after they formed they relocated to the United States. They released their first album AWB and it quickly became known as a “masterpiece”. From this album came the Grammy Award winning song “Pick Up the Pieces”, which reached the No. 1 spot on the charts. They disbanded in 1982 but three of the original members with a new line-up got back together in 1989 and saw success with further albums and a DVD. They are still recording and touring.
