He is a singer born in Ohio who began singing with his parents at his local church when he was a child.
He started his professional career as a singer as a member of the national touring cast of Hair. This led him to taking dancing, singing and acting studies in Manhattan and he became a member of the group Revelation and found himself touring with artists such as Bee Gees, Isaac Hayes and Smokey Robinson.
In the 1970s he was heard by James Taylor when he made an appearance on Saturday Night Liveand ever since the phone call he received as a result, he has recorded and performed live throughout the world with him featuring on his songs such as “Shower the People”.
He became a much sought after session singer and has since been heard touring and recording with numerous artists that include Beck, Jimmy Buffett, Phil Collins, Aretha Franklin, Billy Idol, Lyle Lovett, Melissa Manchester, Bette Midler, Aaron Neville, Bonnie Raitt, Lionel Ritchie, Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, Brenda Russell, Luther Vandross and many others.
As a solo artist he released his debut album in 1984 and has since released several others on his own label What’s Good Records.
