She is a folk singer, guitarist and composer born in Washington State who performed in various colleges and clubs on the West Coast during he 1970s.
She joined the composer Jay Ungar during the late 1970s after meeting in a club in rural New York and they occasionally played together until she went to work as a member of the house band of the A Prairie Home Companion radio show in Minnesota.
Jay Ungar and Molly had become romantically involved, later marrying in 1991, and she would play bass for his group Fiddle Fever when required. They later saw success with their recording of “Ashokan Farewell” which was used as a theme tune for the TV documentary series The Civil War which won a Grammy Award for the soundtrack and was also nominated for an Emmy.
Jay Ungar had started up Jay’s Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps in the early 1980s, which was where he played “Ashokan Farewell” at end of each camp. Molly is a designer of the programs as well as running them as a full-partner.
She works with Jay as part of the popular duo Jay Ungar & Molly Mason or Jay and Molly as well as with their Jay Ungar & Molly Mason Family Band and Swingology.
Recordings she has released include American Dreamer, The Lover’s Waltz The Harvest Home Suite, A Song of Home and Relax Your Mind as well as performed or being a composer on on numerous albums by other artists, compilations, several soundtracks. She and Jay have appeared on various radio and TV shows and the couple also present weekly live concerts called Live from the Quiet Room on Facebook from their home.
