Martin, Scott

Percussionist, pianist and teacher who obtained his B.A. in music at the University of Alberta, Drumset Performance Certificate at MacEwan, and M.M. at Rutgers University, where he has gone on to pursue his Doctor of Musical Arts.

Groups with whom he has performed include the Edison Arts Society Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Edmonton Wind Ensemble, the Exit 9 Percussion Group, the Manalapan Battleground Symphony, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Rutgers SummerfestOrchestra, and the Rutgers Wind Ensemble. He has fulfilled the roles of Principal Percussionist for the Bravura Symphony, the Manalapan Symphony and the Monmouth Symphony, and Principal Timpanist for the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra.

In 1992, he laid down some tracks that later resurfaced on the Edmonton Wind Ensemble album, Snake Fence Country. Another recording on which he appears is the Rutgers Wind Ensemble’s American Images.

He helped his fellow Rutgers student, James Kalbach, get his “Three Pieces for Timpani” an airing in March 1994. The eleven-minute work requires one performer to play five timpani instruments.

On 11^th April 2004, he joined cellist Claudia Benker and pianist Keiko Halop for a performance of Stefania de Kenessey’s “High Summer” at Weill Hall, which is part of Carnegie Hall, in New York.

In the field of musical education, he has taught at the Academy of Music in Spotswood, New Jersey, and at his eponymous Martin Music Studio in nearby Edison. He as also given private lessons to his students on a wide variety of instruments, including drums, marimba, piano, snare drum, timpani, and xylophone.
