Arranger, conductor, keyboardist and vocalist who was touring professionally by the time he was 21. An avid bowler, he won a tournament in Bakersfield, California, and probably could have gone pro had he not been seduced by music.
He joined The Jimmy Joyce Singers in the 1960s and appeared on the Smothers Brothers’ television program for three years. Other artists with whom he collaborated around this time include Tennessee Ernie Ford and Johnny Mathis.
He also did some film work, singing on the soundtracks of Dr. Doolittle and Marlowe, and more television, doing a stint on The Glen Campbell Show and conducting the orchestra on the Pat Paulsen special, Live at the Icehouse, in 1970.
In the 1970s, he hit the road again, this time with Climax, who had a hit with the song “Precious and Few”. Then he landed on Mac Davis’s TV show and continued performing with him for over a decade.
In more modern times, he formed the band Mimosa and played live gigs on weekends at the Jackson Rancheria Hotel in Jackson, California. He had his own CD called I Keep Going Back to Joe’s: The Vocal & Piano Stylings of Rick Lipp.
