Lin, Lucia

She is a violinist and teacher who has performed as a soloist, an orchestra member and chamber musician born in Champaign, Illinois. She took her degree studies at the University of Illinoisand further studies at Houston’s Rice University.

She began playing the violin from a very young age and made her debut, when she was just eleven years old, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In 1985 she became a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and in 1988 rose to the position of Assistant Concertmaster. Two years later in 1990 she was a prize winner at the Tchaikovsky Competition held in Moscow and in 1991 debuted in New York at Carnegie Hall as a solo recitalist.

In 1991 she transferred orchestras when she joined the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra as their Acting Concertmaster for a year. In 1994 she acted as Joint Concertmaster of the London Symphony Orchestra for the season and she performed in that position again for the 1996 season. When she had completed her second stint with the LSO in 1996 she returned to the Boston Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Concertmaster. She remained with them in that position until 1998 which was around the same time that she married the Boston Pops Orchestra conductor Keith Lockhart. They had a son in 2003/4 but sadly separated in 2005.

An active chamber musician she is a founding member of the Boston Trio and Innuendo, as well as performing with Boston University’s quartet-in-residence Muir String Quartet. This has led to her performing in several music festivals as well as at Houston’s Da Camera Society and London’s Barbican Hall Chamber Series. She has also been a guest recording musician with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players.

Aside from the Boston Symphony Orchestra she has worked with many other orchestras that include Graz’s Festivalorchester in Austria as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Melrose Symphony Orchestra, Moscow State Orchestra, Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

No stranger to the recording studio, she can be heard on albums that include John Harbison: Simple Daylight; America, American Visions, Celtic Album, Holiday Pops and My FavoriteThings: A Richard Rodgers Celebration by Boston Pops Orchestra, Words from Paterson by Boston Symphony Chamber Players, Bright Sheng: H’Eng and Other Works by the New York Chamber Symphony, Lyrical Works by Claus Ogermann and the soundtrack for Mary Reilly.

Recently she has performed as a violinist with the BSO holding the Dorothy Q. and David B. Arnold Jr. Chair.

In the field of musical education she has been on the faculty of Boston University’s College of Fine Artsas Associate Professor of Violin.
