He is a violinist who started to play the violin when he was 6 years old , trained with David Madison, the assistant concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra when he was 13 and went on to study at the Philadelphia Musical Academy, turning down a basketball scholarship so he could concentrate on his musical career.
It wasn’t long before left his studies at the Academy to serve in the US Army band and after finishing his service returned there, which led in 1960 to him winning an audition to become a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Alongside his work with the orchestra he was a music advisor of the Music Society of Southern New Jersey and as a chamber musician was a co-founder of the New Philadelphia Quartet.
He became an acting concertmaster with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 1989 following an invitation by Leonard Slatkin.
He retired as a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2016 after 56 years performing with them.
