Lewis, Sarah

Cellist from Saint Paul, Minnesota, who studied piano at the MacPhail Center for the Arts when she was only three years old.  Her family moved to Delaware when she was six years old and she gravitated toward the cello.  She attended Juilliard and Southern Methodist University and studied with Lev Aronson and Channing Robbins.

In 1994, she joined the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and was with them until 1996.  Other groups with whom she has performed include the Lakes Area Chamber Orchestra, the Lakes Area String Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Percy Faith Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Thuringer Salonquintett.

She performed “Cello Concerto in A Minor” by Antonio Vivaldi with the SPCO in Boe Chapel at St. Olaf College on 2nd March 2011.

In September 2002, she and Kyu Young Kim and Layton James gave the world premiere of “The Healing Fountain” by David Evan Thomas at the Raspberry Island Bandstand.

She participated in the Alexandria Festival of the Lakes in 2004 and 2005.  She and bassist Chris Brown, violinists Gregory Fulkerson and Celine Leathead and violist Tamas Strasser interpreted the “String Quintet in G major” of Antonin Dvorak.  She and violinist Stephanie Arado and pianist Susan Billmeyer offered up Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Trio in A minor”.

On 19th August 2009, she and cellist Scott Lykins, violinists Jonathan Magness and Michael Sutton and violists Alexander Pena and Samantha Rodriquez performed Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “String Sextet in D minor, Op. 70” (“Souvenir de Florence”) at the Lakes Area Chamber Music Festival in Lutheran Church of the Cross, Nisswa.

She returned to the LACMF in August 2010 for performances of Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville:  Summer of 1915”, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring suite and Felix Mendelssohn’s “Octet for Strings in E major, Op. 20”.

In October 2011, she was one of several SPCO musicians who performed in a chamber concert that included Elliott Carter’s “Enchanted Preludes”, Chick Corea’s “Addendum” and Ned Rorem’s “Aftermath” and “Trio”.

A similar pair of concerts was held at Benson Great Hall in Arden Hills and Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie in September 2012.  The program comprised “Adagio for Strings” and “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber, “Bright Music” by Ned Rorem and “Quintet” by John Harbison.

In the field of music education, she has taught at St. Thomas University and adjudicated for the Concerto-Aria Competition at Northwestern College.
