Lewis, Jon

Trumpeter from Falls Church, Virginia, who started performing at nine years of age.  In 1981, he graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence with a degree in trumpet performance.  His teachers included Bob Findley, Armando Ghitalla, Pat Mastroleo, Tony Plog, Jimmy Stamp, Roger Stoner, and Bobby Shew.

Upon graduation, he relocated to Los Angeles, California, and made a huge reputation for himself as an indispensable part of the studio recording community.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Bruce Lofgren Big Band, the Chatsworth Brass Quintet, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Long Beach Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Brass Quintet, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Los Angeles Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New West Symphony, the Nick Ross Orchestra, the Pasadena Pops Orchestra, the Pasadena Symphony, and the Santa Barbara Symphony.

In May 2003, he gave a master class and recital at the International Trumpet Guild conference, hosted by Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where he gave the world premiere of Curt Wilson’s “Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble”.

He did same at his alma mater in November 2006 as part of their “Band Spectacular!” to raise funds for KU band student scholarships.

On 27th October 2008, he and pianist Junko Ueno Garrett and trombonist Andrew Malloy gave a faculty artist recital at California State University in Northridge.  The evening comprised world premieres of pieces composed by Adrienne Albert, Jason Barabba, and Steve Williams.

He was back at CSU-Northridge for a trumpet recital on 9th November 2009.

On 26th January 2010, he and pianist Peter Collins premiered John Prescott’s “Sonata No. 3 for Trumpet and Piano” at Missouri State University.

Then it was back to the University of Kansas, where he gave a master class and recital in the Swarthout Recital Hall on 27th January 2010.

In the spring of 2010, he participated in KU’s Brass & Percussion Master Series.

He was a featured soloist with the Santa Barbara Symphony in February 2011 when they performed Felix Mendelssohn’s “Symphony No. 5” (“Reformation”), Nino Rota’s “Concerto for String Orchestra” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings”.
