Leone, Raphael

He is a flautist, piccolo player and university professor born in Basle, Switzerland who studied the flute with acclaimed musicians such as Jean-Pierre Rampal as well as training to be a music teacher.

In his professional career as a musician he began with Basle’s Radio Symphony Orchestra.  He later went on to perform in Norway as a member of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and in South Africa as a member of the Durban Symphony Orchestra.

In 1972 he became a member of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and has remained there until his retirement as well as giving performances as a chamber musician with the Vienna Concertino and the Flutist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra ensemble.

In 1988 he began teaching at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the following year he changed positions and joined the faculty of Vienna’s University of Music and Dramatic Art alongside holding workshops and master classes.

He has given performances and taught at several national and international music festivals and held the position of president of the Austrian Flute Association.

Recordings he has performed on include Piccolo Carnival by Jean-Louis Beaumadier and Haydn: Zingarese; Landler; Nocturnes by Ensemble Bella Musica de Vienne.
