Lefkowitz, Ronan

Violinist from Oxford, England, who started playing at seven years of age and took his first lessons from his father, a violinist and Music History Department head at Boston University.

He attended Brookline High School and served as concertmaster of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and the International Youth Symphony Orchestra, which was conducted by Leopold Stokowski.

His teachers included Gerald Gelbloom, Szymon Goldberg, Max Rostal, Joseph Silverstein, with whom he studied at Harvard College, and Louise Vosgerchian.  He graduated from Harvard College with a Bachelor’s of Music degree in 1975.

In 1976, he became a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  Other groups he has worked with include the Boston Pops, Collage, the Griffin Music Ensemble, and the Hawthorne String Quartet.

He and three of his fellow BSO musicians performed “Concerto for Four Violins” by Antonio Vivaldi on Evening at Pops in 1984.

In the summer of 1986, he gave the U.S. premiere of “Chain 2” by Witold Lutoslawski at Tanglewood’sFestival of Contemporary Music.

He and five other GBYS alumni gave the world premiere of The Gesar Legend by Peter Lieberson at HarvardUniversity on 12th June 1988.

In the field of music education, Ronan has served on the faculties of The Boston Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center.
