He is a classical guitarist, artistic director and teacher who began playing the guitar when he was 9 years old and later graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He took master classes with Eliot Fisk, David Russell, Leo Brouwer, Luciano Pavarotti and Yehudi Menuhin among others and private studies with the pianist Alicia de Larrocha, and after leaving his education he became an assistant to Michael Lorimer at his masterclass in North Carolina, which would cover the entire year. While he was there he would also specially perform for Andres Segovia.
In his professional career he has performed at many major international venues such as London’s Wigmore Hall, Sapporo in Japan and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and with acclaimed artists and groups such as Ivo Pogorelic, Cecelia Bartoli, Itzhak Perlman, the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, the Cascade and Sunriver Festival Orchestras and the Kronos and Emerson String Quartets.
Championing the American composer, David Maclaine, he has premiered many of is commissioned works in numerous American cities.
As an artistic director he has worked closely with The Third Angle New Music Ensemble and since 1996 has worked in collaboration with the soprano Janet Chvatal.
As a teacher in Portland, Oregon, he has taught students that have gone on to win competitions and attend schools such as the North Carolina School of the Arts, the San Francisco Conservatory, The Juilliard School and The Royal Conservatory of Music in London, and later have a successful musical career.
