Kramp, Philip

Violist from central Illinois who attended University High School and furthered his education at the Curtis Institute of Music. In 2006, he was a semifinalist in the Holland America Music Society’s (HAMS) Competition.

He was a violist at the 2007 Marlboro Music Festival and performed in The National Arts Club’s winter series with the Ikarus Chamber Players. On 8^th February 2008, he appeared on Ed Cunningham’s WHYY-FM program, Showcase, on which he and four other Curtis Institute students performed “Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34” by Johannes Brahms.

He spent most of the year living, thinking and breathing “String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95” by Ludwig van Beethoven, as it was the focal point of the entire Curtis curriculum. As Principal Viola of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, he was charged with helping to present the quartet in a classroom context and then go and perform Mahler’s arrangement of it on stage at Carnegie Hall.

In the summer of 2008, he got a reprieve from Beethoven and got to test his chops on Mozart’s “String Quartet in G major, K. 387” at the Marlboro Music Festival. He graduated from Curtis in 2009 and spent that July at Marlboro, as well, playing music by Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky.

In August, he performed with the Aries String Quartet at The Young Artist Program which is part of Music from Angel Fire. The following year he found himself in the Cadeaux Quartet, playing a program that ranged from Beethoven (thankfully, Op. 127 this time) to Thomas Healy.

In 2010, he participated in The Irving M. Klein International String Competition and performed at the Ravinia Festival. Philip has been a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and participated in The Curtis Alumni Recital Series. Don’t be surprised to see him at Marlboro anytime soon, either.

In the 2010s he played as a member of the Kansas Symphony Orchestra, the Omaha Chamber Society and in 2018 he was a member of the Festival Orchestra for Music in the Mountains.
