Knarren, Rik (17th September 1980-Present)

Trumpeter who attended the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and has worked with Concerto Rotterdam, the European Union Youth Orchestra, Flexible Brass, the Maribor Chambre Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and Southern Brass

In 2000, he appeared on the Tigran Mansour album, Van Tied tut Tied.  Gamers may have heard him without even knowing it:  He played trumpet on the soundtrack of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.

Concerto Rotterdam featured him as a soloist in their recital on 10th March 2002 that comprised Tomaso Albinoni’s “Concert in Bes voor trompet en strijkorkest” and “Concert in d opus 9 nr 2”, Georg Frideric Handel’s “Concerto grosso in Bes, opus 6 nr 7”, Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Divertimento in F, opus 3 nr 5”, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”.

On 21st December 2002, the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra and Groot Omroepkoor rang in the holidays with Roel van Oosten’s “Quatre Noels Anciens”, ArvoPart’s “Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten”, Alexandre Tansman’s oratorio, Isaie, le Prophete, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Christmas Carols”.

Rik helped the football team of Muziekcentrum van de Omroep win the annual Dutch Orchestra Football Tournament, an annual tourney involving teams from six Dutch orchestras, on 8th June 2003.

On 14th July 2006, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra appeared at the North Sea Jazz Festival with special guest, Branford Marsalis.  Flexible Brass released Heroes:  Music for Brass by Kerry Turner, in the same year.  Their first CD was entitled The Power of Brass.

The Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic and Groot Omroekoor honoured the Advent with Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Orkestsuite nr 3 in D BWV 1068”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Mis in c, KV 427, and Francis Poulenc’s “Quatre motets pour le temps de Noel”, on 21st December 2007.

On 19th December 2008, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Groot Omroepkoor joined forces in a Christmas concert of Giacomo Puccini’s Messa diGloria and Ottorino Respighi’s Vetrate di chiesa.

Rik was one of several musicians to perform a Raadhuisconcert in Hilversum that included George Antheil’s “Bohemian Grove at Night”, Samuel Barber’s “Summer Music”, Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City”, and Francis Poulenc’s “Le bal masque”, “L’invitation au chateau”, et “Sextuor”, on 21st April 2009.

On 31st October 2009, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic collaborated with harpist Lavinia Meijer in a program of Henk Badings’ “Harpconcert”, Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ouverture Die Weihe des Hauses”, Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Eerste symfonie”, and Isang Yun’s “In Balance”.

The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra interpreted Thomas Ades’ “Tevot”, Johannes Brahms’ “Symfonie nr. 1 in c opus 68”, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Variaties over een thema van Thomas Tallis”, on 15th January 2010.

On 7th January 2011, they offered up Sergei Prokofiev’s “Scythische suite, opus 20”, Nikolai Roslavets’ “In de uren van de nieuwe maan”, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Pianoconcert nr. 3 in d, opus 30”, with Nicholas Angelich at the keys.

They teamed up with soloist Alina Ibragimova on 15th January 2011 for Bela Bartok’s “Concert voor orkest”, Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s “Concerto funebre”, and Otto Ketting’s “Eerste symfonie”.

In 2015 he decided to change his career and pursued his interest in fashion.
