He is a violinist and teacher who began his musical studies with the violin in Detroit, Michigan when he was four years old. Before long he was playing with some of his community orchestras and when he was 9 years old he performed with the South Oakland Symphony.
He took further studies with renowned violin teachers and started at Wayne State University in 1962. During his time here he became a member of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He later joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the United States Army band Strolling Strings.
He became a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1971 and retired from the orchestra in 2011. It presented Herold with the C. Hartman Kuhn Award in 2010.
He has also been a member of the Camilli String Quartet and held the position of concertmaster for Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra from 1987 and the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra since 1991.
Recordings he has been heard on include Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique” by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Tchaikovsky, Bond, Vivaldi, Jacob by the Chamber Society Orchestra of Philadelphia.
In the field of musical education he has worked in community workshops in Drexel Hill and Upper Darby and has been a string coach for the Philadelphia Region Youth String Music Program. He has been a faculty member at the Philadelphia International Music Festival.
Outside of music he has made a bike tour to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis for the MS Great 8 Foundation.
