Multi-reed instrumentalist whose earliest credits include an eclectic mix of albums such as Jelly: A True Story, D.C. Larue’s Confessions, Live and More by Donna Summer, and Frank Sinatra’s 1979 boxed set, Trilogy.
In 1990, he teamed up with the pop-rock band Toy Matinee on their self-titled effort, comprising one-third of “Sal’s Clarinet Trio” on “Turn it on Salvador”, a paean to abstract painter Salvador Dali.
Armando Manzanero required him to multi-task on alto flute, alto sax, and flute on his 1992 release, Les Canciones Que Quise Escribir. Likewise, Mason Williams offered up A Gift of Songin time for Christmas 1992, featuring Jon on oboe. In 1993, he teamed up with children’s songwriter Hap Palmer on A Child’s World of Lullabies: Multicultural Songs for Quiet Times, again doing triple duty on clarinet, flute and oboe. Oboe was his instrument du jour on Nina Simone’s A Single Woman and Peter White’s Promenade, released the same year.
In 1994, he reunited with Hap Palmer on the album, So Big – Activity Songs for Little Ones, playing flute and saxophone, and was credited as a music supervisor on the made-for-TV movie, Runaway Daughters. He was Richard Greene’s flautist on The Greene Fiddler, released in 1995. In 1998, he was a parenthetical member of the Buddy Bregman Big Band on (It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That…) Swing. The turn of the millennium found him blowing oboe and sax for Lisa Richard on her album, Born to Entertain.
In 2003 he bought a chromatic harmonica which he has since made several recordings with. From 23rd November 2004 through 9th January 2005, he was credited as a member of the woodwind section for a production of Paint Your Wagon at The Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, California.
It was back into the children’s market for Jon in 2006 on Joanie Bartels’ Jump for Joy. Equal heights were reached on Annie Barker’s Mountains and Tumult, released in 2007, and featuring Jon on clarinet.
He returned to the stage in 2008 for a production of Vanities, the musical, which was performed at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. Other musicals to which he has lent his talents include Grand Hotel, The Musical and The Grand Tour, both mounted by The Colony Theatre Company in Burbank, California.
He retired in 2014.
