Kindel-Heimerl, Patricia S.

Bassoonist and contrabassoonist often credited as Patricia Kindel who has been a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic who studied music at Cal State, the Claremont Music Festival, the Music Academy of the West, the New College Music Festival, and the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she earned a Masters degree in 1978.  A year later, she appeared on the Frank Sinatra boxed set, Trilogy.

In 1981, she joined the L.A. Philharmonic.  She had previously been a member of the CETA Symphony, conducted by Paul Senia, and the Long Beach Symphony, where she occupied the principal bassoon chair.

On 24th September 1982, she appeared as a member of the New Wave Chamber Players as part of the South Bay Chamber Music Society, Inc.’s concert series, performing Mozart’s Sonata in B flat major, K. 292, with cellist Daniel Rothmuller.  Five years later, she was invited to be a special guest at the Fairbanks Arts Festival in Alaska.

In the 1990s, she returned to the recording studio as a session musician on David Byrne’s The Forest and Harry Connick, Jr.’s When My Heart Finds Christmas.

She ushered in the new millennium in Alaska, at the Sitka Music Festival this time, performing a June 24 concert at Northern Light Church in Juneau.  On 11th December 2005, she helped premiere Damian Montano’s Concerto for Piccolo and Contrabassoon on the West Coast with Susan Greenberg.

In the spring of 2006, in concert with the Santa Monica Symphony, she gave a contrabassoon demonstration to over one thousand elementary school students at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

It was not her only foray into music education, as she has also been involved with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestral Training Program, and taught at Pomona College and the University of California-Santa Barbara.  She has also served as a member of the Philharmonic’s Negotiating Committee.

In her free time, Patricia has also played at parties and weddings, and appears with the New Music Group and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Music Society.

She left her position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the end of the Hollywood Bowl 2017 season.
