French horn player who was the Principal Horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a quarter of a century until his retirement in the late 1990s.
Charles did not begin to pursue music as a vocation until he was well into his thirties. He had acquired his Doctor of Philosophy in Physics and was a fully tenured professor when he decided to take some time off and go to auditions. He landed a spot in one of Denver’s orchestras for one year and then won the prime spot in the BSO horn section.
Recordings on which he appears include a series of Anton Reicha woodwind quintets by the Westwood Wood Quintet on Crystal Records, Brass Busters by the Canadian Brass, Ravel: Orchestral Works by the BSO, and Schubert: Octet by the Boston Symphony Chamber Players. You can also see him in the performance video, The Canadian Brass Spectacular.
Since his retirement from the BSO, he has spent a lot of his time free-lancing and teaching in his new home state of Minnesota.
