Bassist from San Antonio, Texas, also credited as Harvey Kagen, who first started playing with Sammy Vaughn and the Star Marks but will be forever inextricably linked to Doug Sahm and The Sir Douglas Quintet. He appears on the Quintet albums Mendocino, 1+1+1=4, Rough Edges, and several compilation albums. He was also a member of the short-lived rock group Medicine Ball.
In 1976, he joined Sahm and The Texas Tornados for the album Texas Rock For Country Rollers. He reunited with fellow Quintet members Sahm and Augie Meyers on 21st January 1981 for a performance on the U.S. music television program Austin City Limits. A video of the concert is available, entitled Live From Austin, Texas: Sir Douglas Quintet.
They also joined forces on Johnny Rabbitt & Friends, co-writing “Holdenville To Hollywood”, a song about Rabbitt’s radio misadventures, with Rabbit and Johnny Perez. Kagen and Meyers had also collaborated on the 1973 release, Western Head Music Co.
Other acts he has worked include Sonny Drew, Denny Ezba and the B.F.B.A., and Gene Vincent.
At the end of the 2000s he had medical treatment for blood clots and bleeding on the brain and now back in San Antonio he plays bass with the Oh So Good! Band that performs at special events and weddings.
