Jones, Robin

He is a British percussionist, backing singer. composer and teacher who was a member of The Roy Young Band in 1971 and 1972. With them he backed the singer Chuck Berry in his live recording of “My Ding-a-Ling” which reached the No. 1 spot on both sides of the Atlantic. He could often be found as a session musician in the Top of the Pops studios in London, where the weekly television chart show would be broadcast.

He is the leader and founder of the sextet King Salsa, who has a sound that is a mix of Salsa, Latin and jazz and he has released several of his own albums, which include Latin Underground, Afro-Cuban Sounds and Latin Jazz: Denga/El Maja.

As a studio musician he has recorded with many artists and appears on several recordings by M People, Dr John, Pet Shop Boys, Matt Bianco, Basia, Miriam Stockley and Elton John. Since the 1980s he has taught young percussionists and even though he underwent a series of heart attacks and accompanying surgery, he has since made a return to making appearances.
