Johnson, Kirsten

She is a violist who studied for her Bachelor of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music and took further studies at the Juilliard School.

She won first prize at the Washington International Competition in 1997 and made her solo debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when she was 17 years old.   She has gone on to work as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist throughout her career with performances at events such as the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, Kohl Mansion Chamber Music Series, the Phillips Collection concert series and the St. Croix Concert Series along with many chamber music festivals held at venues across the United States.

As an orchestral and chamber musician she has performed with ensembles that include the Colorado Quartet, Concertante Chamber Ensemble, Jackson Symphony, the Juilliard Symphony, Kalamazoo Symphony, Oberlin Chamber Ensemble, Orion String Quartet, Peninsula Symphony, St. Lawrence Quartet and Vermeer Quartet.  She became the Associate Principal Viola with The Philadelphia Orchestra in 2007.

Recordings she performs on include Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival by the Orion String Quartet and as a featured artist on Arensky, Dohnanyi – Live from El Paso Pro-Musica January 7 2006.

In the field of musical education she has been on the faculty of the Philadelphia International Music Festival.
