He is a recording engineer, producer, singer and musician born in Epsom, Surrey, England, who began a singing career with The Presidents in the 1960s but it was unsuccessful, so he began to work as a studio engineer in London.
His name became known and he was asked to help rescue the Get Back sessions for The Beatles. The group were not happy with all the versions he had produced in his attempt to assist and they passed it over to Phil Spector who came up with the resulting Let it Be album.
He then moved to working with The Eagles on their first three album releases and helped establish the sound they became known for. He would also go on to work with and produce many other artists including The Steve Miller band, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Eric Clapton, Blue Oyster Cult, The Clash and many more.
In the movies he has worked on the sound recording of The Who Rocks America 1982, Mad Dogs & Englishmen and Charlie is My Darling, and his name was mentioned in the film Almost Famous after the fictitious group Stillwater did not want to use him.
His sons Ethan and Andy are both known record producers who have worked with several acclaimed artists.
