He is a bass player and singer-songwriter born Alan Charles Jardine in Lima, Ohio and met Brian Wilson at High School when his family moved to Hawthorne, California.
He played stand up bass on the first Beach Boys single released but then left the band temporarily to attend pre-dental college. He was replaced by David Marks.
He returned in 1963 as a touring replacement for Brian Wilson and then returned full time a year later when Marks left. He sang lead on several of their songs including “Help Me Rhonda” and “Then I Kissed Her” and because his falsetto was alike to Brian Wilson’s he often substituted him in the studio and in concert.
He swas a co-writer of songs that became hits including “Lady Lynda” and a re-write of “Cottonfields”. He also suggested they record “Sloop John B”.
He left the touring version of The Beach Boys in 1998 after Carl Wilson died, and went on to tour with his Endless Summer Band with several members of the ex-Beach Boys touring members, which include his son Matt.
In 2011 he joined with previous members of the Beach Boys to record an album and embark on The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Reunion Tour. After the tour in 2012 he, Brian Wilson and David Marks would not be touring with the band any further but he and his son did perform on Brian Wilson’s solo album in 2015 and accompany him on the tour. He toured again with Wilson for his Pet Sounds tour in 2016.
