Jackson, Timothy (1972-Present)

Arranger, composer, horn player and music director from Preston, England, who attended the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the University of Manchester.

He joined the European Union Youth Orchestra as their principal horn and, in 1994, served as the music director for the Lancashire Students’ Training Orchestra.

Other groups with whom he has worked include the Alison Balsom Brass Quintet, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the English Chamber Orchestra, the European Brandenburg Ensemble, the Fibonacci Sequence, the Fusion Wind Quintet, the Halle Orchestra, the Hyperion Ensemble, the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata, the Marais Ensemble, Onyx Brass, the Philharmonia, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Royal Opera House Orchestra, Covent Garden, the Royal Philharmonic, the Scottish Opera, the St. Paul’s Sinfonia, and the Ten TorsOrchestra.

In June 2001, he recorded Naresh Sohal’s “Hexad for Flute, Horn, Percussion, Violin, Cello and Bass” for the album, Chamber Music: Volume 1.

The John Armitage Memorial commissioned him to write “No Answer” in 2002, which appeared on 2003 release, The Far Theatricals of the Day.

On 4^th October 2003, he and accompanist Ian Buckle appeared at the British Horn Festival, where they performed the first movement from Gordon Jacob’s “Horn Concerto” and Thea Musgrave’s “Music for Horn and Piano”. Timothy soloed on his own etude, “Don’t Make it Bad”. Much of the festival was captured on CD.

He has arranged and composed for Onyx Brass, and on 9^th April 2005, he sat in for Andrew Sutton when they interpreted his “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis” at Howard Community College.

In November 2005, he toured with the Hyperion Ensemble. Their program, entitled “Exploring Russia”, included Leos Janacek’s “Concertino”, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Sonata No. 8, Op. 84”, Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Piano Quintet, Op. 57”, and Igor Stravinsky’s “Septet”.

“Don’t Make it Bad” was one of the pieces chosen to be played at the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2006.

On 21^st October 2006, Timothy was a guest soloist with the Ten Tors Orchestra at St. Andrew’s Church for a tribute to the late Sir Malcolm Arnold. The concert featured Arnold’s “Horn Concerto No. 2”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Horn Concerto No. 4” and “Symphony No. 40”, and Franz Schubert’s “Symphony in B flat”.

Timothy conducted the Philharmonia in the world premiere of his “Atalanta” at Queen Elizabeth Hall on 6^thNovember 2007.

On 17^th November 2007, Onyx Brass performed his “Anything But” and “Two Haiku” at the University of Plymouth.

His “Passacaglia” was performed by the Chetham’s School Wind Orchestra, the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales and the Philharmonic Winds in 2008.

In 2008, Timothy appeared on the London Horn Sound’s Give it One. He also wrote two of the album’s tracks, “Lana’s Lullaby” and “Three Point Turn”.

Paolo Rizzuto performed “Don’t Make it Bad” at the Conservatorio Svizzera Italiana of Lugano in June 2009.

On 31^st October 2009, Consort offered up an all-Jackson affair that included Timothy’s compositions, “Cambridge 1209” and “Three Point Turn”, and his arrangement, “The Sound of Music Jazz Suite”.

He was the featured soloist of the St. Paul’s Sinfonia on 18^th December 2009 in a program that comprised Georges Bizet’s “Symphony in C”, Mozart’s “Symphony No. 31” (“Paris”), and the world premiere of Matt Rogers’ “Horn Concerto”.

On 6^th April 2011, Onyx Brass performed his “Anything But” and “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis” at Clarendon Muse, along with a pair of fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach and Shostakovich. Timothy arranged music by those two composers on the Onyx Brass album, Fugue.

The Fusion Wind Quartet gave a lunchtime concert at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in April 2011 that included Arnold’s “Three Shanties for Wind Quintet, Op. 4”, Darius Milhaud’s “Suite for Wind Quintet, Op. 205” (“La Cheminee du Roi Rene”), and Carl Nielsen’s “Quintet for Winds, Op. 43”.

On 9^th May 2011, the Elysnan Trio appeared at the University of Liverpool in a recital that included a pair of trios by Lennox Berkeley and Johannes Brahms, “Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano” by Frederick Delius, and Timothy’s own “Two Miniatures”.

Audition Mode performed “Don’t Make it Bad” at Temple University on 14^th June 2011.

On 2^nd August 2011, trumpeters Mike Allen and Brian Thomson, horn player Laurence Davies, trombonist Matthew Gee and tuba player Kevin Morgan ended their recital in Shanghai Culture Square with Timothy’s arrangement of songs by George Gershwin.

In the field of music education, he has taught at Bedgebury School, Broomlands School, Chetham’s School of Music, the Royal Marines School of Music, and Trinity College.

He has also been a panel member and trustee of the John Armitage Memorial, a group dedicated to recognizing new composers and their works.
