He is a cellist and teacher who was born in England to a family where his father was the acclaimed violinist Emanuel Hurwitz CBE who led the English Chamber Orchestra, Melos Quartet and the New Philharmonia Orchestra among others.
He started to learn the cello when he was just 8 years old and went on to study with tutors that included Amaryllis Fleming and Keith Harvey.
In 1970 he played with the progressive rock and jazz big band Centipede. Five years later he became a member of the Amphion String Quartet around 1975 and remained with them for fifteen years before taking the position of cellist at the Philharmonia Orchestra.
From the 1960s he has performed on many recordings that range in genre from classical to popular music. Some of these include Finzi/Berkeley: Music for Oboe & String Quartet by the Amphion String Quartet, Septober Energy by Centipede, Hoople by Mott the Hoople, Bump ‘N’ Grind by Jackson Heights, Blue Moves by Elton John and Latin Cello by London Cello Sound, Mercadente: Decimi/La Poesia by The Philharmonia Soloists, The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other by Van der Graaf Generator and the Relatively Complete Symphonic Recording of Les Miserables.
In the field of music education he was a teacher at Trinity College of Music for a decade but left and became a private tutor.
