Howe, Dylan (4th August 1969-Present)

He is a drummer and composer born in Hampstead, London, England and named after Dylan Thomas.  His father is Steve Howe who was the guitarist with the group Yes and the group’s song “Clap” was written for him by his father. His brother, Virgil, was a keyboard player and had his own band, The Dirty Feet.

He started playing the drums when he was 10 and when he was 13 he decided that he wanted to be a jazz drummer after his parents took him to see Buddy Rich at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.  He began playing gigs at the school while still studying at King Alfred School in 1981 and in 1982 played at University College School.

When he left school in 1986 he spent the next couple of years working in shops and as a window cleaner alongside playing with various North London groups.  In 1988 he decided to start his career as a professional musician and the following year was running nights at The Shack in Soho and was a member of the house band at The Limelight and also at The Orange in West Kensington, where he backed artists such as Howard Jones and Chaka Khan, among others, which would be the forerunner to his work as a session musician.  He also became a member of Philip Bent’s group.

In 1992 he became a member of the British television Channel 4 house band for Frank Skinner’s series Packing The In and followed that in 1996 for Mel and Sue’s  Light Lunch.

He became a member of Ian Dury and the Blockheads in 1997 and remained with them well into the 2000s, performing on several of their albums.  In 2003 he formed his own jazz quintet, which has released several solo albums, and in 2004 joined up with his dad and his brother to tour as The Steve Howe Remedy Band.  In 2007 he joined up with his dad again and the organist Ross Hammond to form the Steve Howe Trio and he also formed Dylan Howe and The Subterraneans.   He has also replaced Steve Monti and played in the Wilco Collins Band.

His session drumming has seen him performing on in excess of 60 albums for artists that include Nick Cave, Ray Davies, Gabrielle, David Gilmour, Tom Jones, Ben E. King, Paul McCartney, Alison Moyet, Seal and Lewis Taylor among many others
