Hostetler, Scott

He is an oboist and English horn player born in Kokomo, Indiana to a family where his mother was a flautist and played with a local orchestra.  He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree, followed by further studies at the Juilliard School and the Aspen Music Festival.

He took on the position of artist-in-residence and Principal Oboe with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra before being appointed English Horn and Oboe at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2002 by Bernard Haitink.

He made his solo debut with the CSO in 2021 when he recorded Concerto for Oboe d’Amore and Strings by J.S. Bach and as a  chamber musician he has often participated in the CSO’s chamber music series.

Recordings he has performed on include the soundtrack of the film Lincoln by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In the field of musical education he has been on the faculties of Aspen Music Festival and the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and at Northwestern University where he taught from 2003 to 2019.  He has more recently been a faculty member of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.  As a coach he has worked with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago since 2006.
