He is an oboist, conductor and composer born in Langenthal, Switzerland, who studied at the Basel and Bern Conservatories and continued his studies with Pierre Boulez.
After taking part in the International Competition and winning first prize his career took off and he met with considerable success.
He performs as a soloist and has appeared with orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, the London Philharmonia, The Chamber Orchestra of Europe and with the Zelenka Renaissance for a recording of this composer’s Six Trio Sonatas for Oboe and Bassoon. He performed the world premiere of “Oboe Concerto” by Elliott Carter in Geneva in 1993 and followed it with the American premiere at Carnegie Hall.
As a composer his compositions include the song cycle Puneiga, Scardinalli Cycle for chorus, flute and orchestra, Partita and the opera Snow White.
He is an honorary member of London’s Royal Academy of Music and a member of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts.
