Hogan, Kathy (1960-22nd August 2012)

She was a violist born Kathleen Hogan who studied at the University of Toronto.  She met her husband, the double bassist John Taylor while they were attending a master class at the Banff Centre and they married in 1982.

She performed as a freelance musician with various orchestras including touring Broadway Shows, and tours by the National Ballet and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Later she  became Principal Viola at the Thunder Bay Symphony for a year and a year or so later she became an extra for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

As a chamber musician she also performed with the Edmonton Arts Quartet and the Dianne New String Quartet at the Edmonton Composers’ Concert Society.

She passed away from lung cancer in 2012, when she was 52 years old and the Alberta Baroque Ensemble and Edmonton Community Foundation established the Kathy Hogan Viola/Violin Memorial Award.  The first recipient of the award was the violinist Deborah Chang.
