Hirschl, Richard

He is a cellist born in Washington, Missouri who started to learn the cello with his father and went on to study with the Associate Principal Cellist of St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Savely Schuster. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music at the Juilliard School, where he debuted in New York with the Juilliard Orchestra and also worked as an associate teacher.

He won the St. Louis Symphony Scholarship Competition in 1980 and in 1988 won both the Irving M. Klein International String Competition and the Juilliard Concerto Competition.

In 1989 he became a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and has also given many performances as a chamber musician with artists that include Daniel Barenboim, Yo-Yo Ma and Andras Schiff. He has also given performances with other orchestras such as Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra, Maracaibo Symphony. Peoria Symphony and St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recordings he has performed on include Corigliano: Symphony No. 1, Arnold Schonberg: Verklate Nacht Op. 4/Piano Pieces Op. 11 and 19/Five Orchestral Pieces Op. 18, Wagner: Overtures and Preludes, Soloists of the Orchestra and Brahms: Violin Concerto/Sonata No. 3 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Duets by Jerry Fuller, Music for Mandolin by Robert Lombardo, Christmas Celebration and Christmas in the Aire by Mannheim Steamroller, Two Different Days by Rob Parton’s Jazztech Big Band and the soundtrack of Lincoln.

In the field of musical education he has taught several private students, been on the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago and been the head of the string department at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts.
