Doctor of linguistics who studied at the Catlin Gabel School and Harvard University as well as in the countries France, Japan, Nepal and Tibet.
He taught at the Universitat Tubingen and Harvard University before becoming a teacher at SOAS University of London where he teaches Tibetan history and language and supervises projects for PhD students on descriptive, corpus and historical linguistics, specialising in Tibetan languages
While at Harvard he was a member of The Harvard University Choir and appeared on their yuletide offering, Christmas in the Busch.
