Cellist whose father, Stevens Hewitt, played oboe with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Sarah attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Mannes College of Music, from whence she acquired her Master’s degree.
On 18th September 1999, she wed violinist Michael Roth in the Church of St. James the Less in Scarsdale, New York.
Groups with whom she has worked include the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the New York Pops, the Philharmonia Virtuosi, and the Willow Ensemble.
From 9th November 1997 through 2nd January 2000, she was in the orchestra pit for a Broadway production of The Scarlet Pimpernel.
She participated in the Distinguished Alumni Recital Series at the Mary Louise Curtis Branch of the Settlement Music School on 18th March 2007.
On 30th and 31st May 2008, the Willow Ensemble appeared at Grace Church Chantry in New York. Their program comprised Mein Herz ist Bereit by Nicolaus Bruhns, “Quartet in A minor, Op. 132” by Ludwig van Beethoven, “Sonata IV” by Gioachino Rossini, and “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber.
Sarah was back on Broadway between 15th August 2002 and 4th January 2009 for a production of Hairspray.
In February 2009, she was one-eighth of an ensemble that performed the “Octet” by Franz Schubert at the Woman’s Club.
She was busy on Broadway from 2009 to 2011: From 1st March 2009 through 14th June 2009, she played cello in the revival of Guys and Dolls; She performed music for a revival of Ragtime from 15th November 2009 through 10th January 2010; and, from 14th November 2010 through 2nd January 2011, played music for the original musical comedy, Elf.
The Willow Ensemble returned to Grace Church Chantry on 10th and 11th June 2011 for a recital of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata, BWV 82 (Ich habe genug) and “Suite in G minor, BWV 808” (“Englische”), and Franz Schubert’s “Die Forelle” and “Piano Quintet in A major” (“The Trout”).
On 29th September 2011, she and fellow cellists Kathy Cherbas, Louise Dubin and Saeunn Thorsteinsdottir and pianist Hiroko Sasaki appeared at John Street United Methodist Church in New York. The recital included “Air Irlandais Varie”, “Caprice No. 9” and “Fantasy on The Enchanted Flute by Mozart, Op. 40” by August Franchomme, and Franchomme’s arrangements of “Ballade in F minor, Op. 52”, “March Funebre”, “Mazurka, Op. 33”, No. 3” and “Preludes, Op. 28, Nos. 7 and 20” by Frederic Chopin.
Sarah was back in the orchestra pit for a Broadway revival of Follies from 12th September 2001 through 22nd January 2012. From 26th April through 13th May 2012, she performed music for the original musical, Leap of Faith.
