Henoch, Michael

He is an oboist who studied at Northwestern University where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees of Music with honours.

While still a student he performed for three years with the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra and in 1970 made his solo debut with the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.  He was then invited to perform as Principal Oboe at the Marlboro Music Festival where he was conducted by Pablo Casals. Since then he has performed at the Carmel Beach Festival, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival and the Peninsula Music Festival.

While still a student in 1972 Sir Georg Solti appointed him Assistant Principal Oboe of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and from 1986 he also performed with the Chicago Chamber Musicians, being appointed Artistic Codirector in 1996.  He has been credited with the idea of the ensemble’s Music in the Millennium series from 1998 to 2002.

In 2008 he was the founder of the ensemble Dempster St. Pro Musica.

Along with his many international tours and recitals he has played on more than 50 recordings made by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, including several Grammy Award winners and nominations.  He was a Grammy Award finalist for his recording of Quartet for Oboe and Strings by Mozart in 2007.  Some of the recordings he has performed on include David Diamond: Chamber Works, Chamber Works for Winds and Strings by Mozart and John Harbison: Chamber Music by the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Weill/Bowles/Martinu and The Medinah Sessions by Chicago Pro Musica, Sacred Arias Bach & Mozart, Corigliano: Symphony No.1,  Wagner: Overtures and Preludes, Carter/Berio/Takemitsu: Partita-Continuo-Visions, Brahms: Violin Concerto/Sonata No.3, Solti/Chicago: The Complete Recordings and the soundtrack to the film Lincoln by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lullaby by Justin Roberts.

In the field of musical education he has served on the faculty of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music as Professor of Oboe.
