Henegar, Gregg

Bassoonist and contrabassoonist who attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and studied with Sanford Berry, Myron Bloom, George Goslee, John Mack, and Robert Marcelus.

He went on to become a member of the Houston Symphony, the Boston Symphony, and the Boston Pops.

On 15th March 1985, he premiered Donald Erb’s Contrabassoon Concerto at Jones Hall with the Houston Symphony.

They offered up Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68, Antonin Dvorak’s Carnival Overture, Op. 92 and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 23 in A major, K. 488 at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on 7th March 1991.

In 1992, Gregg joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Members of the BSO appeared at Jordan Hall on 2nd December 1996, when they performed Mozart’s Quintet in E flat major, K. 452 and Quintet in G minor, K. 516 and a 1912 arrangement of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, with Stephen Drury and Yukiko Takagi at the keys.

In November 2002, the BSO teamed up with conductor Andre Previn and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet for a program that comprised the Appalachian Spring Suite of Aaron Copland, Piano Concerto for the Left Hand by Maurice Ravel, and Symphony No. 6 by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Vasily Petrenko conducted works of Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff on 10thOctober 2009.  The concert included Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead, Op. 29, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93, and Stravinsky’s Scherzo fantastique, Op. 3.

On 3rd May 2010, members of the BSO interpreted Ludwig van Beethoven’s Octet for Winds in E flat major, Op. 103, Gunther Schuller’s Octet and Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade at Jordan Hall in Boston, Massachusetts.

The BSO and Tanglewood Festival Chorus joined forces at Boston Symphony Hall in a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion, BWV 245 on 11th April 2011.

In the field of music education, he has taught at Boston University, the New England Conservatory and Tanglewood, and authored Modern Exercises for the Contrabassoon.
