Hassman, Ellen Zoe

Cellist who attended the Curtis Institute of Music in the 1960s and studied with Orlando Cole and Leonard Rose.

One of her earliest solo performances took place when she was only a fifteen-year-old student at Curtis. On 20^th July 1963, under the baton of James Christian Pfohl, she performed Camille Saint-Saens’ “Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33” with the Brevard Music Center Philharmonia.

In 1966, she graduated and won the Concert Artists Guild Competition.

She was the guest soloist of the MIT Symphony on 21^st October 1978, when she interpreted Antonin Dvorak’s “Cello Concerto”. David Epstein conducted.

In 1979, she gave a performance of the “Sonata for Solo Cello” by George Crumb in New York.

She was in the orchestra pit for the Broadway revival of Show Boat from 2^nd October 1994 through 5^th January 1997.

On 26^th October 1997, she was the featured soloist with the Westchester Chamber Orchestra in a rendering of Victor Herbert’s “Suite for Cello and Orchestra” at Rye High School.

Other groups with whom she has performed include the All Seasons Chamber Players, the Ives Symphony String Quartet, the Metropolitan Opera, the New Jersey State Opera, and the New York Pops.

Recordings on which she appears comprise Broadway’s Greatest Gifts: Carols for a Cure Volume 7, Live in Concert 2006 by Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli at Carnegie Hall and Straight on Till Morning by Blues Traveler, the original New York cast recording of Louisiana Purchase, and the soundtracks of Jungle Fever, Koyaaniqatsi: Life out of Balance and Mo’ Better Blues.
