He s a trumpeter born in Rauma, Finland who studied at the Tampere Conservatory with the trumpeter Raimo Sarmas. After earning his degree in 1982 he took further studies with the trumpeters Timofei Dokshitser and Henri Adelbrecht.
In 1987 he was the second prize winner at the Prague Spring Trumpet Competition and two years later, in 1989, he was named Brass Player of the Year at Lieksa Vaskiviiko. In 1990, he won the first prize at the Ellsworth Smith Trumpet Competition.
In 1978 he became am alternate lead trumpeter with the Tampere Philharmonic and remained with that orchestra for 6 years until 1984 when he became a solo trumpeter with the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Helsinki and has been principal trumpet of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2019.
As a soloist he has performed with many orchestras nationally and internationally and has performed the premieres of many trumpet works. He has also been a chamber musician with ensembles that include the Brass Septet Imperial, the Finnish Brass Ensemble and the Protoventus Ensemble.
From 1996 he has held the position of artistic director of the annual brass music event Lieksa Vaskiviiko and in 2012 he was appointed Brass Ambassador of Lieksa.
He has released over 35 solo recordings that include American Trumpet Sonatas, Lyrical Cornet, Schedrin/Gruner/Bloch/Jolivet: Trumpet Concertos, Trumpet Rhapsody, Virtuoso Trumpet, The Russian Trumpet, Trumpet Adagio and Velvet Trumpet as well as Charm & Passion of Youth by the Finnish Brass Ensemble, Trumpet Concertos and Mahler: Symphony No. 1; Blumine by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra Christmas with Kiri te Kanawa: Carols from Coventry Cathedral by Kiri te Kanawa and Piercing the Celluloid Veil: An Orchestral Odyssey by Mark Wolfram along with numerous Christmas albums, compilations and collections.
In the field of musical education he became a faculty member at the Sibelius Academy in 1988 and continued to teach there until 2014. He was a guest professor at the Sensoku Gakuen College of Music in Japan from 2012 to 2020.
His son is the actor, singer and director Samuel Harjanne.
