Handy, Trevor (1965-Present)

Cellist from Boston, Massachusetts, who started playing at seven years of age and made his debut as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen.

He attended Juilliard, the Longy School of Music, the New England Conservatory, the Switzerland Academy of Music, Tanglewood, and the Yehudi Menuhin Summer Academy. His teachers included Albert Fuller, Maurice Gendron, Joel Krosnick, Lorne Munroe, Channing Robbins, Leonard Rose, and Jaap Schroeder.

Groups with whom he worked include the Capitol Ensemble, the Columbus Symphony, the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Griffon String Quartet, the Honolulu Symphony, the Jacksonville Symphony, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, the Longy String Quartet, the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony, the Pasadena Symphony, the Romauldo Trio, and the Santa Barbara Symphony.

On 19^th November 1981, the Longy String Quartet participated in an all-Franz Joseph Haydn affair at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Auditorium.

The Griffon String Quartet won the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 1991.

In December 2002, Trevor became a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.

He was a guest artist at California State University in Fullerton on 16^th March 2003 when he and six others performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, Op. 20.

On 13^th December 2005, members of the LACO interpreted music composed by faculty and students at Los Angeles City College. Their program comprised “Cantabile” by Page Williams, “Corridor” by Nicholas King, “Music for Squares” by Matthew McGaughey, String Duo by Dan Wanner, String Quartet No.1 in C minor by Leonie Roessler, and “12-Tone Zone” by Michael Gonzales.

The Romauldo Trio appeared at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park, California, on 12^th May 2006 for a recital of Serenade, Op. 10 by Ernst von Dohnanyi and String Trio by Heitor Villa-Lobos.

On 11^th February 2008, Trevor took part in a program entitled “From Bach to Brubeck” at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. The evening featured five cellists performing transcriptions of music written for other instruments, such as the “Chaconne” from Partita in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, Sonata in F major, Op. 99 by Johannes Brahms, Sonata in G minor, Op. 19 by Dave Brubeck and Eugene Friesen.

Trevor participated in the 2008 Music on the Hill festival where he performed Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, Op. 20, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Oboe Quintet in C minor, K. 406a, and Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.

On 9^th November 2008, The Capitol Ensemble offered up a double-header of Brahms that included the master’s “Liebeslieder Waltzes, Op. 52” and String Quintet in F major, Op. 88.

Trevor was also on hand for Brahms’ Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, Haydn’s Quartet in A major, Op. 20, No. 6 and Rand Steiger’s Quintet for Clarinet and Strings at Los Angeles Harbor College and Pacific Unitarian Church in December 2008.

In January 2009, he took part in the WinterMezzo series entitled “Bandits” (presumably because the composers of the featured pieces borrowed liberally from or paid homage to other artists). Trevor and John Novacek performed Beethoven’s “Magic Flute Variations, Op 46″ and they were then joined by violinist Scott Yoo for George Sviridov’s Piano Trio.

Members of the LACO descended on the Bridges Hall of Music at Pomona College in Claremont on 6^th March 2009 for a recital of Brahms’ Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, Haydn’s Quartet in A major, Op. 20, No. 6 and Steiger’s “Woven Serenade”.

On 12^th May 2009, members of the Santa Barbara Symphony shared the stage of Fleischman Auditorium at the Natural History Museum where Trevor opened with Bach’s Suite No. 3 for Solo Cello and then all eight players performed Franz Schubert’s Octet in F major, D. 803.

Trevor returned to the Music on the Hill festival in the summer of 2009 when he and bassist John M. Pellegrino interpreted the “Largo” and “Gigue” from Evaristo Felice Dall-Abaco’s Sonata da Camera.

On 27^th February 2010, the LACO appeared at Alex Theatre in a concert of Bach’s Concerto in D minor for Three Violins and Oboe d”amore Concerto in A major, Henry Purcell’s Chacony in G minor, and Vivaldi’s Cello Concerto in C minor.

Members of the LACO appeared on The Broad Stage at the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center on 29^th April 2010 for Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25 and Arnold Schoenberg’s String Trio for Violin, Viola and Cello, Op. 45.

On 24^th March 2011, they were back on The Broad Stage for Bruce Adolphe’s “Self Comes to Mind” and Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, Op. 20.

Trevor and harpsichordist Patricia Mabee and violinist Julie Gigante celebrated their anniversaries with the LACQ with a recital at the Hancock Park Residence of Consul General of Belgium on 28^th October 2011. The evening included music of Arcangelo Corelli, Loeillet de Gant, Steve Goldstein, Jean-Marie Leclair, and Francesco Maria Verancini.

On 18^th February 2012, the Pasadena Symphony appeared at Ambassador Auditorium where they performed the Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Egyptian”) by Camille Saint-Saens, with Esther Keel at the keys, the “Polovtsian Dances” from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, and Scheherazade, Op. 35 by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

In spite of a busy performance schedule, Trevor has managed to amass an impressive discography. Recordings on which he appears include: Amparo by Dave Grusin & Lee Ritenour; Fax It! Charge It! He can also be heard on the soundtracks of Angels & Demons, Constantine, Disturbia, Elektra, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Gigli, He’s Just Not That Into You, Inside Man, The Last Samurai, Million Dollar Baby, National Treasure, Passionada, The Rite, Sin City, Spider-Man 2, The Taking of Pelham 123, Unfaithful, War Horse, and X-Men: First Class.

In the field of music education, he has served as a teaching assistant at The Juilliard School.
