Hagstrom, John

He is a trumpet player born in Chicago, Illinois who studied at the Eastman School of Music.

In Washington D.C. he performed as a member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band and for the last three years of his six year tenure held the position of Principal Trumpet.

He performed as Principal Trumpet of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra before being appointed Fourth Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by Daniel Barenboim in 1998.  He became Second Trumpet in 1999, where he holds The Pritzker Military Museum & Library Chair.  During his time with the CSO he has been the host of the podcast Intermission which was originally a method for the CSO to continue to connect with their audience during the COVID-19 pandemic.  He produced the hour-long video Tribute to Veterans: Trumpeting the Power of Music in 2020

As a recording artist released his debut solo CD Music for Trumpet and Winds in 2006.  Other recordings he has performed on include Tribute to Ellington by Daniel Barenboim and others,  Brahms: Violin Concerto/Sonata No. 3 and the soundtrack to the film Lincoln by Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Live by Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass, Brass Nation by Michael Davis, Christmas Extraordinaire, C.W. McCall – American Spirit and Christmas Celebration by Mannheim Steamroller, The Teddy Bears Picnic by the New Columbian Brass Band and So Long by The Webstirs.

In the field of musical education he was previously a member of the faculty of Wichita State University as Assistant Professor of Trumpet and in 2006 was one of the initiators of Dream Out Loud which is an educational partnership between the Yamaha Corporation of America and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association.  He is a well respected trumpet teacher and soloist nationally and internationally.

Yamaha produce the John Hagstrom Signature Series Trumpet Mouthpiece.
