Gunzenhauser, Stephen

Artistic director and conductor from New York who attended the High School of Music and Art, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the New England Conservatory, and Oberlin College.

In 1974, he became the artistic and executive director of the Wilmington Music School.

He then assumed the posts of conductor and music director for the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. For his efforts, in 1990, he was named the First Cultural Ambassador of Delaware. In 1999, the Delaware Government bestowed upon him its highest honour, Order of the First State.

In 2004, he was the artistic advisor and conductor of the Bogota Philharmonic Orchestra in Colombia.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra performed “An American in Paris” by George Gershwin, “Bacchus et Ariadne Ballet Suite” by Albert Roussel and “Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2” by Maurice Ravel on 16^th September 2012. The concert was broadcast live on WRTI in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Stephen has a massive discography, and here are but a few highlights: Dvorak: The Complete Symphonies and Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5/March Slave with the Slovak Philharmonic; Borodin: Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 and 3 and Orff: Carmina Burana with the CSR Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava); Mendelssohn: Piano Concertos with Derek Han and the Israel Chamber Orchestra; Paganini Violin Concertos: No. 1, Op. 6/No. 2, Op. 7 with Ilya Kaler and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra; and, Vivaldi: The Four Seasons/Concerto Alla Rustica, RV 151 with Capella Istropolitana and Takako Nishizaki.

In the field of music education, he has served as artistic director and conductor for the Endless Mountain Music Festival.
