Griffin, David

He is a French horn player who studied at Northwestern University and graduated in 1987.

He first became a member of the Rochester Philharmonic and went on play with the Montreal and Houston symphony orchestras.  In 1995 he was appointed a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra where he performs as fourth horn.

Giving many solo performances he debuted with the CSO in 2010 and went on to make the world premiere recording of Bruce Broughton’s Sonata for Horn which was released on his own solo album.  In May 2021 he performed at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts with the pianist Mio Nakamura.

As a guest musician he has been Principal Horn with the Shanghai Radio Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Performing as a chamber musician he has toured internationally with the CSO brass Quintet and throughout the United States as a member of the Prairie Winds wind quintet, since it was formed in 1996, and recorded two CDs with them.

Recordings he has performed on include his own For You along with Brahms: Violin Concerto/Sonata No. 3 and the soundtrack of the film Lincoln by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Live by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass.

In the field of musical education he has been a clinician and featured artist at the annual symposium of the International Horn Society and been a teacher at Northwestern University and McGill University.  More recently has been on the faculty of Roosevelt University.  He has given many master classes at several schools that include the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts as well as at various summer festivals.
