Grabois, Adam

Cellist who attended the Kinhaven Music School, Lycee Henri IV and Swarthmore College, and studied under David Finckel.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Eos Orchestra, the Finckel Cello Quartet, the Lile Piano Trio, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, the New American Chamber Orchestra, the New York Chamber Symphony, the New York Chamber Soloists, the New York Pops, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, the Solisti New York Orchestra, and Voices of Ascension.

In the 1990s, he was in the orchestra pit for the Broadway revivals of CandideHow to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and The Sound of Music.

He started his own record label in 2002 entitled Reflex Editions. A website is listed below.

In the spring of 2006, he and pianist Allen Brings performed “A Night Song for Flute, Cello and Piano” by Margaret Collins Stoop, with the composer rounding out the trio.

The New York Chamber Soloists presented a program named “The Baroque Trumpet” on 2nd December 2007. The recital featured music by Pietro Baldassare, George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Antonio Vivaldi.

On 5th May 2008, Adam participated in the Kinhaven Music School’s Capital Campaign in a concert at the home of Richard Brice in New York. The program included Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 5” and Johannes Brahms’ “Songs for Alto, Viola and Piano, Op. 91”, with vocalist Hilda Harris.

Adam and violinist Deborah Wong performed Zoltan Kodaly’s “Duo, Op. 7” and Maurice Ravel’s “Sonata pour Violon et Violoncelle (a la memoire de Claude Debussy)” in Lang Concert Hall at Swarthmore College on 16th March 2009.

On 2nd May 2010, they reunited for a recital of works by Kodaly and Bohuslav Martinu in Allen & Claudine Siegel’s home in Westport, Connecticut.

The New York Chamber Soloists offered up a “Six Sextets Program” on 24th September 2011. Their program comprised J.S. Bach’s “Ricercare a 6”, Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Sextet in E flat major, Op. 81b”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Theme and Variations in F major, K. 287”, Francis Poulenc’s “Sextuor for Piano and Winds”, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Overture on Hebrew Themes”, and Vivaldi’s “Concerto in G minor for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Violin, Cello and Keyboard”.

On 14th July 2012, he was member of an octet that gave the world premiere of “Crossing Shadows” by Nicolas Scherzinger, with the composer on saxophone, at Kinhaven Music School.

Recordings on which Adam appears include: Amy Beach/William Mayer: Distant Playing Fields with the Gregg Smith Singers and Orchestra of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble; Beethoven/Debussy/Rachmaninov with John Nauman; Brand New Testament by Mo Solid Gold; Brooklyn is Sinking by Josh Weinstein; Duos, Duologues and a Duette by Allen BringsDuos: Martinu/Ravel/Kodaly with Deborah Wong; The Finckel Cello Quartet Plays BachHappy Songs by Audra McDonald; Only Heaven by Ricky Ian Gordon; and, Wonder in the World by Kelli O’Hara.

In the field of music education, he has taught at Kinhaven Music School and the Weston Music Center and School for the Performing Arts. He also co-authored “Notes to Violin-Cello Duos” with frequent collaborator, Deborah Wong.
