Fredrickson, Richard

Double bassist who won a Concert Artists Guild award in 1972 and subsequently made his debut at Carnegie Recital Hall at twenty-four years of age.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Broadway Bach Ensemble, Continuum, the New York Pops, the Muir Quartet, the 92^nd Street Y Chamber Symphony, the Phantasy Chamber Players, the Simon Sinfonietta, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Washington Chamber Symphony.

In 1973, he and pianist Helen Taverniti delivered the world premiere of Ken Benshoof’s “Sonata for Double Bass and Piano” at the Cornish Theater in Seattle, Washington.

He gave the world premiere of “Concerto for Double Bass” by Alvin Brehm with the 92^nd Street Y Chamber Symphony on 21^st May 1983.

On 18^th March 1989, he and keyboardist Colette Valentine premiered Lowell Liebermann’s “Sonata for Contrabass and Piano” at The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.

He performed Giovanni Bottesini’s “Gran Duo Concertante in A major” and Franz Schubert’s “Trout Quintet” with the Muir Quartet at St. George’s Episcopal Church as part of the Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival on 15^th June 1990.

On 6^th June 2002, he and Michelle Levin played “Sonata for Double Bass and Piano” by Paul Hindemith at the same event and locale.

He helped the Washington Chamber Symphony open their twenty-seventh season with the world premiere of “Endangered Species” by John Carbon on 13^th September 2002.

On 3^rd June 2003, he and Michael Reynolds returned to the Fredericksburg Music Festival at St. George’s Episcopal Church where they offered up five of the “44 Duos for Two Violins” by Bela Bartok, arranged for cello & double bass.

Continuum interpreted music of Galina Ustvolskaya at Merkin Concert Hall in New York on 16^th February 2008. The program comprised “Composition No. 2” (“dies irae”), “Piano Sonata No. 6”, “Sonata for Violin and Piano”, “Symphony No. 4” (“Prayer”) and “Symphony No. 5” (“Amen”).

On 18^th April 2009, they presented a program entitled “China in America” in which Richard, along with Moran Katz, Kristina Reiko Cooper, Jared Soldiviero and Arthur Kampela performed “Vicissitudes I” by Du Yun.

He was the guest soloist of the Broadway Bach Ensemble at Broadway Presbyterian Church in New York on 3^rd May 2009, when he interpreted Domenico Dragonetti’s “Concerto in A major” and Vittorio Giannini’s “Psalm 130” (“Out of the depths my soul cries out…”).

On 11^th September 2010, he gave one of the first performances of “Divertimento Concertante” by Paul Ramsier to help open the Simon Sinfonietta’s seventh season in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Recordings on which he appears include: Christmas Comes Anew by the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus, and Giannini: Psalm 130/Carbon: Endangered Species/McKinley: Passacaglia and Phoenix in Flight with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.
