Ferrillo, John

Oboist and teacher who was raised in Bedford, Massachusets, and studied at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music.

While young he was a member of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and has since performed and taught at the Aspen, Blossom, the Craftsbury, the Marlboro, the Monadnock and the Waterloo music festivals.

He accepted the position of second oboe at the San Francisco Symphony in the early to mid 1980s before becoming a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 1986.  In 2001 he moved on to accept the same position at the Boston Symphony Orchestra after having performed with them as a guest musician several times previously.

He has also performed as a guest musician with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Boston Classical Orchestra and the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra.

No stranger to the recording studio he can be heard on albums that include Gaubert: Works for Flute, Vol. 1, Martinu: Chamber Music with Flute, Musical Evenings with the Captain, Vol. 2and Tavener/Birtwhistle: To a Child Dancing in the Wind/Entr’actes & Sappho Fragments.

In the field of musical education he has been on the faculties of Illinois State University, West Virginia State University, Mannes Bach Institute, Juilliard School from 1987 to 2002, Boston University, the National Orchestral Institute, the Tanglewood Institute and the New England Conservatory from 2002.

He has co-written and published the audition preparation book Orchestral Excerpts for Oboe and is also the designer of the Harvard Double Reed gouging machine.
