He is a double bassist born in England. In 1968 he emigrated with his family to Canada and went on to study music at the Curtis Institute of Music.
He became a member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada after graduation and remained with them for two seasons before joining The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1984. In 2014 he was awarded the C. Hartman Kuhn Award given annually “to the member who has shown ability and enterprise of such character as to enhance the standards and the reputation of The Philadelphia Orchestra.” He has also served on the orchestra committee where he has held the position of chair.
Performing as a guest musician he has been Principal Bass with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.
Recordings he has performed on include Peter Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”/Dumka by The Philadelphia Orchestra.
