Echevarria, Lander

Violinist and violist from Bilbao who started playing when he was nine years old and became a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra of Spain.

He attended the Bilbao Conservatory, the Conservatory of Amsterdam, the Oviedo music college, the Royal College of Music in London, the Sweelinck Music Academy, and the Utrecht Academy. His teachers included Felix Andrievsky, Nabuco Imai, Tchiala Kvernadze, Yuri Nashuskin, and Keiko Wataya.

Groups with whom he has worked comprise Arche, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Cuarteto Quiroga, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of Euskadi.

In March 2009, the LSO offered up “Russian Dreams: The Music of Sergei Prokofiev” at Lincoln Center. The eight-day affair included all of Prokofiev’s symphonies and violin concertos and his second and fourth piano concertos.

They teamed up with pianist Lang Lang, Synergy Vocals and violist Tabea Zimmermann for a concert at Barbican Hall that featured Luciano Berio’s “Sinfonia”, Hector Berlioz’s Harold in Italy and Franz Liszt’s “Piano Concerto No. 1” on 7^th November 2010.

On 5^th May 2011, they gave the world premiere of Tim Garland’s “Concerto for Percussion, Saxophone and Orchestra”, with the composer on sax and Neil Percy on percussion. Francois-Xavier Roth conducted.

They delivered the European premiere of Andre Previn’s “Concerto for Violin, Viola and Orchestra” with the composer conducting, Yuri Bashmet on viola and Anne-Sophie Mutter on violin on 19^th February 2012.

Recordings on which Lander appears include Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 with Bernard Haitink and the LSO and Walton: Belshazzar’s Feast/Symphony No. 1 with Peter Coleman-Wright, Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony Chorus and Orchestra.
