Dodge, Baird

He is a violinist born in New York City who is the son of the composer Charles Dodge. He studied both the violin and viola while young and was a student at Juilliard School’s precollege division. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at Swarthmore College and his Master’s Degree in music at the State University of New York-Stony Brook.

Performing his father’s works he premiered Violin Etudes in 1994 and made a recording of Viola Elegy in 1994. He later premiered Elegy for Viola and Orchestra in 2015 which is an arrangement of Viola Elegy by Hugh Keelan.

In 1996 he became a violist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra but moved to performing in the second violin section later that year. In 2002 he was given the role of Principal Second Violin.

On the CSO’s MusicNOW series he has performed and recorded the premiere of the chamber concerto Carillon Sky which was written for him by Augusta Read Thomas. Other premieres he has performed with the CSO include James Matheson’s Violin Concerto in 2011.

A busy chamber musician he has worked with several conductors and given guest performances with Chicago and Colorado string quartets. He has also performed at several chamber music festivals.

In the recording studio he has played on albums that include his own Charles Dodge: 1977-2009 along with Verse by Patricia Barber, Stereo is King by Mason Bates, Any Resemblance is Purely Coincidental and A Retrospective by Charles Dodge, Brahms: Violin Concerto/Sonata No. 3 and James Matheson: Violin Concerto by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Come On Up and A Soulful Christmas by Brian Culbertson and Hindemith: Clarinet Chamber Music by John Bruce Yeh.
