Dixon, Louise (1949-Present)

She is a flautist born in Pigeon, Michigan, who first became interested in the flute at the music program in school.  She led to her joining the Saginaw Youth Orchestra where she won the Young Artist Competition which led to her giving a solo performance with the Saginaw Symphony.   She studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy, earning a performance certificate and went on to Indiana University where she gained her Bachelor of Music degree.  Further studies were at Northwestern University where she earned her Master of Music degree.

She became a member of Grant Park Orchestra and held the position of Principal Flute with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.  In 1973 Sir Georg Solti appointed her to the flute section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra where she remained until her retirement in 2015 after 42 years service.

As a chamber musician she gave performances on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s chamber music series and gave numerous solo performances with the CSO and as a guest musician with the Chicago Chamber Musicians.  She has also participated in the Bach Week Festival.

Bach: Mass in B Minor, Corigliano: Symphony No. 1, Wagner: Overtures and Preludes, Carter/Berio/Takemitsu – Partita-Continuo-Visions, Brahms: violin Concerto/Sonata No. 3, Solti/Chicago: The Complete Recordings and the soundtrack of the film Lincoln by Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Anne Sofie Von Otter: Sacred Arias Bach & Mozart by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Wiener Philharmoniker.

In the field of musical education she has been a faculty member of DePaul University School of Music.

She is married to the Assistant Principal Oboe of the CSO, Michael L. Henoch.
