Davies, Gareth (1971-Present)

Author, educator and flautist from Guildford, Surrey, England, who graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1994.  He wasted little time parlaying his education into a full-time position as Principal Flute of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.  In May 2000, he assumed the same role with the London Symphony Orchestra.

He seemed to spend most of 2004 in the recording studios.  Karl Jenkins wrote a concertante for him entitled “Quirk”, which he recorded for the album of the same name.  In addition, he recorded the entire syllabus for grades one through eight—more than 150 works—for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

On 9th November 2011, he performed the “Flute Concerto” of Carl Nielsen at Barbican Hall with the LSO, who rounded out their program with “The Mermaid” by Alexander von Zemlinsky and “The Miraculous Mandarin” by Bela Bartok.

He also had the honour of playing in the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics with the LSO On Track Orchestra.

A prolific writer, he has penned articles for BBC Music MagazineClassic FM MagazineThe Guardian, and The Telegraph, and actively contributed to the LSO’s online blog.

He is no stranger to other media, having appeared on BBC 4 Television, BBC Radio 3, and the LSO’s “Life in a Day” series.

Recordings on which he appears include:  Debussy:  La Mer/Jeux/Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune with the LSOKiri Sings Karl with the Adiemus Singers; Nielsen:  Violin Concerto/Clarinet Concerto/Flute Concerto with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The Peacemakers by Karl Jenkins; Prelude:  The Best of Charlotte Church; and, The World Over by Steve Hillman.

He can also be heard on the soundtracks of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Star Wars:  Attack of the Clones.

In the field of music education, he has been active with Flutewise, the LSO Discovery program and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, and given master classes at the LSO/Guildhall Centre for Orchestra and the South West Flute Festival.  In December 2012, he became Professor of Flute at the Royal College of Music.
