Cooker, Matt

Cellist who attended the University of Michigan and studied with Oliver Edel and Samuel Mayes. In 1986, he joined the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Other groups with whom he has worked include The Gift Horse Project, the L.A. Philharmonic, Orchestre Surreal, papercranes, the Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet, Symphony in the Glen, and TEMPO Ensemble (The Epicenter Musical Performance Organization).

He has been equally busy in the movie and recording studios. Albums on which he has appeared include Anthems and Beneath a Balcony by Marc M. Cogman, Bionic by Christina Aguilera, Commemoration by Vinny Golia, Cruel Melody by Black Light Burns, Homeland by Michael Hoppe, Hotel Luna by Suzanne Ciani, Late Registration by Kanye West, Low Stars, Middle Child by papercranes, Pickin’ up the Pieces and Songs for a Breakup: Vol. 1 by Fitz & the Tantrums, Silver Screen in Blue by Marty Krystall, The String Quartet Tribute to Staind and Write About Love by Belle & Sebastian.

He has performed on the soundtracks of Admissions, Blades of Glory, Bugbaby, Flags of our Fathers, Freaky Friday, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Island, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Children, Shakespeare Behind Bars, Shooter, Solaris, Steamboy, Throw Momma from the Train, and Transformers.

Matt also has one solo album to his credit, 2008’s Never Play Alone.

In the field of music education, he has served on the leave replacement faculty of the California Institute of the Arts and completed the teacher training program at Yoga Works in 2003. He is also a bow repair expert at Earthlink.
