Ciapka-Sangster, Joanna

She is a violinist born in Poland who studied at the Academy of Music in Poznan, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Music Performance in 1989.

When she had graduated she performed with various Polish orchestras and toured Europe and Egypt. These orchestras include the Baltic State Symphony Orchestra, the Pagart Polish Performing Arts Agency, the Polska Filharmonia Kameralna Chamber Orchestra and the State Philharmonic Orchestra.

She moved to Edmonton, Canada in 1992 where she worked with various orchestras and became a faculty member of the Society for Talent Education. In 1994 she won an international audition for 1st Violin chair and became a member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

As a soloist she has given performances with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, the Concordia College Orchestra and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

As a chamber musician she became a member of the Alberta Baroque Ensemble in 1995 and in 2005 she founded the Kent Sangster’s Obsessions Octet with her husband, the jazz saxophonist and composer, Kent Sangster, with its debut CD earning a JUNO nomination. She was then a co-founder of the Obsessions String Quartet as an extension of the octet. Since then she has performed with ensembles that include The Arden Ensemble, ECHO, La Belle Epoque, the Polish Folk Arts Ensemble “Polonez” and Pro Coro Orchestra.

Recordings she has performed on include Tommy Banks’ Christmas: Instrumental Music for the Holiday Season and the Obsession, Melodia and Steppin’ Up by Kent Sangster’s Obsession Octet

She has hosted the Polish radio program Katedra Klasyki since 2004 and has been active with the Polish Culture Society of Edmonton (TKP) where she has been on the board of directors since 2008 and president since 2010. She was TKP’s Artistic Director of Chopin 2010 Celebration Committee.
